THE COMMON STORY

The Common Story is an historical research project which ran between 2014-2019 with the aim to explore the rich history of Tooting Common and to communicate the findings to a wider audience.

The Common Story: A History of Tooting Common is the outcome of this research project to highlight the people and events that have shaped Tooting Common over the centuries - with contributions from local community groups, residents, archivists, council staff and professional historians.

Wandsworth Council commissioned Dr Katy Layton-Jones, a cultural historian and historical consultant, both to undertake research and oversee the research undertaken by local volunteers. The project combined both archival and on-site research, and in the process, offered opportunities for research training and volunteering and a chance to contribute directly to the interpretation of Tooting Common.

The book is available to download for free and hardcopies can be requested for £10 from the Tooting History Group, the project’s main partner.
