The Woodfield pavilion is located on a large rectangular field called the Woodfield Recreation Ground, which is designated Metropolitan Open Land. The land is not part of the adjacent common land but is contiguous with it and is owned by the London Borough of Wandsworth and managed as part of their overall responsibility for Tooting Common.

It was a long-term aspiration of Wandsworth Council for the Woodfield pavilion to be used for activities and purposes that benefit the local community and to provide a “heart” for the common. However, the building was in a state of disrepair and its original use, as a sports pavilion, had lapsed, which is why extensive restoration work needed to take place.

 

The development of the architectural plans for the pavilion was supervised by The Woodfield Project; the community group leasing the building. The refurbishment work on the pavilion started in October 2018 and was completed in June 2019. As part of the works the interior of the building was completely stripped bare and a new ceiling and floor was installed to create a two-storey layout. The building was insulated and all windows were removed, refurbished and reinstated with security shutters.

On the ground floor there is now a large hall with floor to ceiling cupboards for storing tables and chairs; a small but fully fitted kitchen; an outdoor room with bench and lockers for those who have been working on the grounds and finally toilets. Upstairs the newly created room has plenty of natural light thanks to new velux windows and has plenty of locked storage. 

On the outside of the building the broken roof tiles were replaced and the apron of the building was repaved in flexipave. The pathways from the pavilion to Abbotswood Road and to Tooting Common were also completely repaved with Breedon Gravel. Finally, the refurbishment work has seen the four faced tower clock returned to the roof of the building for the first time in many years and the restoration of the weather vane atop the clock tower.
