Join us in celebrating National Tree Week!

As part of National Tree Week, Enable Leisure and Culture on behalf of Wandsworth Council are holding events to celebrate Wandsworth’s tree heritage.

From the ancient oaks on Tooting Common to the huge cedar on the Edgecombe Hall Estate, Wandsworth is home to a huge variety of trees. In total there are approximately 49,500 recorded trees across Wandsworth, not including those in wooded areas, and around 350 different species. This includes around 1,000 thorns, which are great for biodiversity, 2,500 oaks and 4,000 London plane trees.

To kickstart National Tree Week this year, Earlsfield Primary School and St Anne’s Church of England School will be helping Tree Wardens to plant three lime trees in King George’s Park.

On Friday 30 November, Wandsworth Council’s Tooting Common Heritage Project will be planting 15 native trees across Tooting Common. Species will include English oak, hornbeam and lime. If you would like to lend a hand, please reserve you spot by emailing TCHP@wandsworth.gov.uk. Meet at the Staff Yard, Dr Johnson Avenue, SW17 8JU for a 10am start. All tools and training will be provided. Please wear clothing and footwear suitable for the outdoors.

On Saturday 1 December, on Wandsworth Common there will be a short talk about Wandsworth’s trees followed by a winter tree identification walk across the common. The event is free, but booking is required. To book your place please visit www.eventbrite.com and search ‘Wandsworth Common Tree Talk and Walk’. Meet at Naturescope for a 1.30pm start.
